International Students

Welcome to Løgumkloster Højskole!

Løgumkloster Folk High School is a common broad folk high school in the small nice, scenic town of Løgumkloster in Southern Jutland.

What drives us is the hope for a better and more sustainable world. However, we also know that hope is not enough, and therefore we equip you and your fellow students with tools, knowledge and a community, that allows you to go out and do something about the world you live in. Saving the world is not something we do individually, but together.

Teachers, students, janitor, kitchen, office staff - we make the folk high school together and create the large, but close, community that characterizes a real folk high school life.

So, whether you want to learn how to cook vegetarian food, explore your political nature or express your thoughts on a blank canvas, do so because you hope.

There is room to choose. Room for friendships. Room for play, community, dilemmas and to be different. In short: At Løgumkloster Folk High School, there is room for you.

What is a Danish folk high school?

A Danish folk high school is a place where you can learn and live. There are many good reasons to do so: some want to develop their creative sides or get really good at what they are passionate about. Others lack a new perspective on everyday life and want to be part of a community.

No matter why you need a folk high school semester, a stay at our school is a great and constructive break. Here you will receive lessons in exciting subjects and spend time with people who are just like you. There is also time for you to be yourself and retire to your room.

Løgumkloster Folk High School's values

The folk high school has a cultural-Christian foundation with great openness concerning both personal and common understandings and expressions of faith, hope and wishes for the future.

The school's daily work is based on community, diversity and on personal and joint active participation that provides influence locally, nationally and globally. History of ideas, philosophy and spirituality are some of the fundamental perspectives that contribute to understanding the present, creating personal and shared dreams for the future, and providing ideas to create both personal and collective development and change.

Schedule

Your very own schedule

Each student chooses three majors and one minor: you have the opportunity to put together your very own schedule according to your interests. We have about fifteen main subjects and a wealth of minors: your biggest challenge will be to decide which subjects to take!

All classes are chosen in the first week, and we expect you to show up for the classes you have chosen.

The weeks are also marked by morning assemblies, meals and shared activities.

Majors

Minors

Mandatory classes

  • Movement class

Get moving at the folk high school. We will play ball games, do CrossFit, run, and play. We also offer a gym membership for those who want to keep up their training during their stay at the folk high school.

  • student parliament

    Student Parliament

During the parliament, we meet and discuss in a democratic way how everyday life at school should be.

What else?

  • Students at Løgumkloster Folk High School have the opportunity to receive individual study and career guidance. The student counselors can help clarify future choices and are available throughout the course for conversations that the individual student sets the framework for. Academic and career guidance can be supportive conversations, but can also be concrete advice on how to write a good application or CV.

During the semester as part of the course, the student will meet people with very different educational backgrounds and have the opportunity to ask lots of questions. In addition, there will be theme nights to prepare for professional or student life.

At the end of the semester, students receive a Folk High School certificate with the opportunity to highlight specific subjects or skills that the student may wish to use when applying for further education.

  • Study trip in Europe

Does what we learn in the folk high school bubble also apply to the wider world? Yes, we have to try it out.

During each stay, we therefore go on a study trip to an exciting place in Europe. Previous groups have been on Interrail in Italy and visited Barcelona, Prague, northern Sweden and Lyon in France.

We are a climate-friendly folk high school and naturally travel by train rather than plane. This is both sustainable and inexpensive, so you do not have to pay extra for the study trip.

    Hiking on the Gendarmstien

Løgumkloster Folk High School is located right next to Brede Å in the beautiful border region. This means that there are plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities, which is why we go hiking on the Gendarmstien trail during the spring. We sleep in tents and shelters and cook outdoors!

FAQ

  • If you stay in Denmark for more than 12 weeks, or you are from a land outside of Europa, you need a VISA. You can learn more at the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI). The site New in Denmark has specific information on Danish Folk High School.

  • The typical student attending a semesters is from age 18 - 30 and is either about to start, to finish or in between a BA and a MA degree.

  • You can choose either a single or a double room. It has an extra price to choose a single room.

Each room has a sink with mirror, a bed, a desk and some storage. Toilets and showers are shared with 4-6 other rooms.

  • We have had international students on every semester so far and we try to incorporate them in the danish lessons by translating. Your language barrier should be no problem.

However we encourage international students to choose practical elective subjects, like painting, baking or playing music, so there will be less talking and more doing.

  • Yes. All the international students are required to choose either “Nordic Living” or “Danish Language” as Major III.

  • In theory, yes. However some of the elective subjects occur simultaneously, and since you can’t be in two places at the same time, you would have to choose one over the other. But don’t worry, elective subjects are first chosen when you get to the high school.

  • Committees (party committee, japanese food committee, plant dying committe, star gazing committe…) are groups of students who work together to create themes activities and animations.

Families are groups of students supervised by a teacher. They take turns being responsible for cleaning or cooking tasks as well as weekend brunches, and meet on Fridays to discuss their moods and upcoming events.

  • Løgumkloster Folk High School is in the category of a small folk high school and can have a maximum of 65 students.

Often, however, there are a little fewer, and you will therefore experience a school with a wonderful little community. The classes are a little bigger than you might know it from primary and secondary school.

Big enough that you can find a close group of friends, but also not so big that there are people you don't know.

At the school, everyone is part of the big community - this applies to everything from the teachers to the janitor and kitchen staff who either live at the school or nearby.

  • There are no classes on weekends. One of the family is responsible for a brunch at 10:00 and dinner at 18:00, but apart from that students are free. Activities or trips are very often organized by the students themselves, but you can also take that time to relax.
